Cozy with Crooks and Riffraff?

Dear Kinnett,

When I left the church’s building after our service this past morning several matters gripped my soul.  

1. I thought of those traveling home in the heavy rain and I asked the Lord for their safety.
2. I thought of those who were at home who truly are not well, and I prayed for them.
3. I thought of an illustrative point made at the beginning of my message yesterday too.  “A pastor met up with a delinquent church member and said to him that he had missed him for several weeks at the church meeting.  The man replied back to the pastor, ‘Well, you know, the children have been sick, we’ve been out-of-town, and besides that, it’s been raining.”  And the pastor said, “Well, it’s dry over at the church.”  And the delinquent church member said, “Yea, that’s another reason.”

While I traveled home my heart was lifted up to the Lord in prayer that He would send a deluge of rain to take the dryness away from our homes, communities, and churches.  We need more than “Mercy Drops Round Us Are Falling” for we are in great need of a flood sent from God upon the dry and parched ground.

Only the reading of the Word of God and the praying of the Word back to God will move the heart and hand of God.  The church is too busy today.  We hustle and bustle around while accomplishing nothing but clouds without water.

Please take time to pray.  Take time to be holy.  Take time to behold Him!

God, burden us of the aridness that surrounds us and is in us.  Prepare us for Spiritual Rain.

God’s Word says, “Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouths and lied unto him with their tongues. For their heart was not right with him, neither were they steadfast in his covenant” (Psalm 78:36, 37). Do we desire God’s presence in our bodies, homes, churches, nation, and the world?

Many claim to want revival. Why do we plead for revival? Is it to save our face, when the first thing we need to do is to lose our face. The fallow ground must be broken up. There is the cost of humiliation and even embarrassment when it comes to revival. God cannot rain showers of blessings on fallow ground. That would just mean more spreading of briars and weeds.

If we are to prepare for rain we must prepare the soil of our hearts. We must be disturbed and broken up for what we see and what we are. But, like so many of us, we do not like to be stirred and agitated in our churches. We like our smooth exteriors while keeping our roots of bitterness and sins hidden.

Revival will come when we really desire it and meet the conditions. But God has not changed the price of revival. He has not placed any of His blessings on the bargain counter at reduced rates. Stubborn wills, hardness of hearts, and pretension in repentance will never meet the criteria for revival.

Our church’s address is no mistake.  God has placed us here to reach out to those who surround us in our neighborhood.  We have this great privilege and responsibility before God.

The Lord has also given us the privilege to live where we do.  It is here on our streets that we become mission minded to those who are our neighbors.  We have the great joy of mastering the art of neighboring.  Our neighbors need Christ, and we have the tool to do just this.

What do we do as we gather in our church buildings?  We learn who we are, and that God has given us a special commission to reach others through prayer and discipleship.  It is our responsibility to share and God’s responsibility to save.

Let’s refocus our prayer ministry toward our neighbors.

It is not amazing all the people gave glory to God for the healing of a blind man?  The Lord of love was passing through Jericho and He stopped. He healed the blind and begging  Bartimeaus (Luke 18:43). But what is so amazing about this for God loves to heal? Is this not the reason for His coming to seek and to save?

Yet when it came to Zacchaeus we find a different story. The Lord Jesus sought and spoke to Zacchaeus while he was up in a tree and then invited, of all things, Himself into this “sinner’s home” and the people grumbled (Luke 19:7). Why?

The Son of man came to “seek and to save that which is lost.” Every person is a sinner–bad sinner, good sinner, we are all sinners in the sight of God who are condemned and lost. It is our ministry to go to where all sinners are. And you know there is not a place where sinners are not!

This ought to be the key verse of our life, “the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which is lost” (Luke 19:10). It is our job to take as many sinners with us to heaven as we travel and pass through this world. May we be found in the sinner’s way!

God is talking, are we listening? In these last days He is speaking to us through His Son, the Lord Jesus. Times are fleeing and lives are valued by what we do with Jesus. But are we listening? How far have we drifted from God and His voice? Have we become more dull of hearing and distracted by the things of the day? Satan is our invisible enemy.

I am praying that my world will hear what God is saying, and to the church may we hear her Shepherd and draw nigh to His side. The world needs to realize that repentance is a necessity and only the Holy Spirit can reveal Christ to the lost and of its unbelief in His Son. They are dead in trespasses and sins and only He can give life. He is the Creator and Redeemer! All things began by Him and they will end in Him. And all will stand before Him! And one day all will kneel before Him!

The people of God should examine themselves and to repent of her selfishness and fleshly ways. We should know better but we have a drift as well from God’s ways. Our ways are not His ways and therefore we must know Him, hear Him, so as to follow Him. As the church goes so goes the family, the city, the country, and the world. Without the church who is to become a part of the conscience which awakens the sinner all will continue in its apostasy. So will the church listen to what God is saying to her? Will we love, pray, witness, give, confess our need to Him, or will we continue to try to deafen what He is saying? He is slow to judgment and yet He is great in mercy!

May we draw nigh and He has promised to draw nigh to us. Listen to Him!

Adoniran Judson and Ann Judson boarded a ship for India that would eventually lead them to Burma (modern-day Myanmar).  They suffered and endured much on the mission field, yet they were used by God in some extraordinary ways.

A letter was written from Adoniram to Ann’s father asking for permission to marry his daughter.   The following is Adoniram’s candid request:

I have now to ask, whether you can consent to part with your daughter early next spring, to see her no more in this world; whether you can consent to her departure, and her subjection to the hardships and sufferings of missionary life; whether you can consent to her exposure to the dangers of the ocean, to the fatal influence of the southern climate of India; to every kind of want and distress; to degradation, insult, persecution, and perhaps a violent death.  Can you consent to all of this, for the sake of him who left his heavenly home, and died for her and for you; for the sake of perishing, immortal souls; for the sake of Zion, and the glory of God?  Can you consent to all this, in hope of soon meeting your daughter in the world of glory, with the crown of righteousness, brightened with the acclamations of praise which shall redound to her Savior from heathens saved, through her means, from eternal woe and despair?

Ann’s dad said “yes,” the couple was married, and a year later they set sail.  Ann’s dad would never see his daughter or son-in-law again.  In fact, Ann would lose her life sharing the gospel with people who had never heard the good news of Jesus Christ.

John Piper said, “God’s plan is that his gospel-spreading, church-planting purpose triumph through the suffering of his people.”  Is this out-of-the-ordinary type of commitment or are we too far behind in our passion for Christ and His gospel?
