Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall

“But be ye doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22).

When you say you believe a biblical truth, where does that belief come from? Some might say:

* My parents taught it to me.

* It’s what my pastor believes.

* I read it in a Christian book.

* A famous Christian said it.

* It just feels right.

* It’s what I’ve always believed.

* It gives me comfort to believe it.

* It makes me happy.

* It seems more inclusive.

* I can’t imagine God behaving otherwise.

* I seriously prayed about it.

* It’s in the Bible.

There is only one 100 per cent reliable source–the application of the Bible in daily life led and supplied by the Spirit of God. The bottom line of any belief we hold onto is if it can be backed up by Scripture. If the Word of God does not back that belief and that action then it is no more than wishful thinking, speculation, or a theory with no impetus of God’s power.

Too many today do not live lives backed by the Word of God. Their plumbline is what they feel or think. It is not according to the Word of God. It causes disruptions in the body of Christ. Therefore we have a church and a nation that is run by our wants rather than by God’s will. The church has run amuck today because it does not run on the tracks of the Word of God led by the Spirit of the Living God. These are our beliefs and it is what we do to satisfy us.

Only Scripture applied by discernment, led by the Holy Spirit, involving both the will and the mind, engaged by the study and application of the Word by faith, really works. Only then will the Word of God transform a person’s thinking, focusing the lens through which he or she sees God, life, others, the world, and reality itself. We have a generation of people doing what is right in their own eyes when they really believe they are doing it God’s way.

  • The Sovereignty of God

    “I will rejoice in doing them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all my heart and all my soul” (Jeremiah 32:41).

    There are so many times when we do not realize the sovereign hand of God at work behind the scenes, caring for His people.  Are we left at the mercy of stalled cars on a railroad track, or of a car that breaks down and costs us our income, or even at the mercy of people who are intent on doing us wrong and harm?  No, a thousand times no!  We are in the hands of a sovereign God who controls every circumstance of our lives and who rejoices in doing us good.

    Many would say that God is in the miraculous, and He is, especially in the scenes we find in the Word of God.  We see it with Moses and Elijah, the miracles of God.  But is God also in the details of our life, of those details we can’t see?  Is God in the events of our lives for our good?  In other words is God in a car wreck?  Or is God with those involved in a Tsunami?  Must we conclude that God always orchestrates the events of our lives to fulfill His purpose?  According to Romans 8:28, the answer is a solid yes.  That verse says, “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose“.  That is why we are commanded to “give thanks in all circumstances” (I Thessalonians 5:18).

    How can we give thanks to God for all that happens to us, the circumstances of our lives, if He were not at work in them for our good?  No circumstance is outside of God’s sovereign will.  And no plan of God’s can be thwarted.  God does as He pleases, and only as He pleases, and no one can frustrate His plans or hinder His purposes!  Look at Psalm 115:3, Job 42:2, Isaiah 14:27, and Isaiah 43:13.

  • Why Do We Mourn? 

    “Can the sons of the bride chamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast” (Matthew 9:15).

    One glad morning the Lord Jesus will return. There are many a tired preacher who will rejoice when He returns. There will be many a people whose hearts have been true to the One they love, who yearn for that day, and then it happens. The Lord Jesus will return to get His bride.

    What a day that will be! What a glorious day when we shall see Jesus. What a wonderful day when all we have lived for, yearned for, longed for – when Jesus shall return. What a great getting-up moment that will be. Loved ones will return with Jesus. Their bodies will be raised from the dead graves from all over, and the power of the resurrection will reverberate throughout all the kingdom of Satan, and the bodies will be released.

    We mourn when the Bridegroom is not here. But one day we will be joined to Him. The older I get, the more I see, and the better I feel about the coming of our Lord. The sin I see, the unfaithfulness that surrounds, with the nations becoming more and more like Sodom, God’s bride yearns for the coming again of Jesus.

    May we say today, “Even so come, Lord Jesus!” We are in the days when the bridegroom is not here with us physically; He has been taken from us, and we fast while we wait. We mourn for Him but it will not be too much longer when we shall rejoice! For He will be with us. Hallelujah! Amen!

     

     

  • Three Days Three Nights

    “Command therefore that the sepulcher be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first” (Matthew 27:64).

    The Lord Jesus did rise again the third day. Three days and three nights in the tomb were accomplished just as He said. No amount of soldiers, edicts from Rome, nor religious power could tone down what would eventually take place.

    Why do people not desire a God who would die for them and rise again? Do they not want their sins forgiven? Do they not want the grave to be defeated? Do we not want our homes to be healed? Don’t we want what our children need in schools and in life?

    One glorious day the Lord will appear again. The stone was rolled down away for all His enemies to look into the tomb and find that He is not there. It is a reminder that He is coming again and all will see Him in that day. The child of God needs to look in for in that look we are reminded that He is not there–for in great power and provision He is seated in glory reigning from above. Child of God live in His living and find in His grace life more abundantly.

  • Counter Cultural: Living Well in a Broken World

    “If ye be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1).

    The cross offends. It cuts across the grain of the heart that is against the very intentions of God Almighty. The cross stands before every person and says, “We offend a holy and righteous God.” We are to say, “I agree.” And we fall down in brokenness and humility and rise to say, “I’m reconciled to God and His ways.”

    The cross reconciles. It is through the cross of Christ where sinners find refuge and reconciliation with God and with other men, no matter color, class, or credit. All people who come into this world by their first birth are bent on their own ways and their own thoughts. But the cross of Christ brings us to God’s way. When we are born again we are twice-born and we show forth the praises of Him who died and rose again for us.

    The cross prioritizes. It is through the work of the cross of Christ where men and women bring their lives into the direction of God. We become slaves of God. We no longer are directed by the flesh but by God. So Sundays are God’s, our time belongs to God, and our families are God’s to build and to use. No item or matter in our lives are off-limits to God. He owns us and all we are.
     
    The cross speaks and it speaks of wisdom and power.     Without the cross of Christ there is no reconciliation, no holiness, and no priorities. Without the cross of Christ there is nothing but chaos and selfishness.  But with the cross of Christ all things are brought into order and into subjection of God’s most holy Son. One day the world will be brought to the cross of Christ and see the results of God’s greatest work. For God will bring all things to Himself.

    “Father, thank you for giving us peace through the blood of your Son’s cross. By your Son you have reconciled all things unto Himself. All things…things in heaven, all things in earth, and whereas we were enemies of God in our mind by wicked works, yet now has your Son reconciled us with Him to You.”

  • You Can Not

    “This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all” (I John 1:5).

    Mark Twain said these words, “You can’t pray a lie. I found that out.” Have we realized that God is looking for men and women who live a life that is pure and holy before Him? Do we not understand that the way the Lord communicates to us is a life that is filled with the aroma of Christ?

    Our salvation and prayer life is not dependent upon us. Our lives are not dependent upon our living it out. Our goals are not His nor are our ways. God began a new work in us when we were redeemed by the blood of Christ. He cleansed us and claimed us for His own. Now until we understand that we don’t know how to pray.
     
    Our fellowship with God and what we have in Him, and our lives being constantly cleansed, which is abiding in Him and our allowing the Spirit of God to work in us, how?–    through the Word of God, the church of God, the sufferings of life–all of which God will use to speak to us. This is how we pray. Not with a lie but with truth. Too many say they pray but their lives are no where ready to receive God’s prayer request.

  • Liberty

    “Stand fast, therefore, in the Liberty with which Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage” (Galatians 5:1).

    The cross has eliminated sin in the world. We don’t see it or feel as yet but we do know it is coming. God is holy and He can not countenance sin and know this: Sin has been subdued.

    Sinlessness will happen for the child of God when he leaves the earth set for heaven. It may be through death or rapture but the albatross of sin is gone as soon as we head for glory to be with the redeemed of all ages.

    Sinlessness will happen for the earth and for the heavens when God makes a new heaven and a new earth. The Book of Revelation assures us that there will be no more sea, death, tears, sorrow, crying, nor pain. When every vestige of sin is removed God will remove the very effects of sin.

    Times of refreshing are coming. The Kingdom of God rests in the bosom of the child of God. One glorious day we will be totally free from sin. Therefore my fellow believer, stand! Stand in the liberty which Christ has made us free. Do not be confused or entrapped with any sin for God has and will free us from the terrible sorrow of sin! In the mean time live by faith through love to the Father.
