Serving a Friend for God

“Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah” (2 Kings 3:11).

Everyone needs a friend who is true. But what we need more is to be a friend who is true. Elijah had a friend in Elisha. Elisha was chosen by God to become a friend of Elijah. Though Elijah found Elisha and threw his mantle over him for the purpose that he might train him, prepare him, and lift him to the office of a prophet, Elijah’s training led to a deep friendship.

Are you a true friend? Do you serve your friend in the Lord with compassion, prayer, and love? Will you miss this friend when he or she is gone from earth? Today in our society many people are “thankful for us” but are you “thankful for a friend.” Elisha poured his life into his aging friend. Why did he pour water into the hands of Elijah? Is this symbolism for serving Elijah? Did Elijah’s hands carry arthritis? Did the warm water help?

The Master’s yoke is to led  and taught by God to become a true friend to others.
God needs you and wants you to surrender to Him so that you may encourage and build others up. We all need a friend but we need to become a friend first of all.

  • What is Happening in Our Country?

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:24).

    How do we explain…

    1.   The massacre in a Florida High School.
    2.   A barrage of sex scandals from Hollywood to Congress to our Seminaries.
    3.   Continued attacks on Christianity.
    4.   The willing slaughter of our nation’s unborn children.
    5.   Growing distrust.  Violence.  Confusion.  Turmoil.

Nothing that is happening in our world today — not one act of perversion or evil — is an anomaly or an accident. What we see today are symptoms of an accelerating moral and spiritual unraveling of our country and world — the natural result of a nation that has turned away from the absolute truths found in the Bible.

The only way for change in the direction of America is the change that happens through hearts of human beings, and that catalyst is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  That change must first happen to God’s people.  W.A. Criswell said it this way, “The nation cannot turn to God if I do not turn to God.  The nation cannot repent, if I do not repent.  God doesn’t win nations or companies or crowds or throngs.   He wins souls one by one.  And the only way we can lift our nation Godward is if I am moved Godward.

The true church can never rest and a faithful pastor’s work is never done.  We need to constantly preach to the world and to ourselves the true gospel, and strive for greater clarity and precision — not less.  By so doing, we cultivate our own spiritual growth, we protect the health of the church, and we strengthen our witness.  Salt and light is what we are to be and that is what will retard the leaven of sin.

  • Leadership Matters

“I have set before you an open door, and no man can shut it…” (Revelation
    3:8).

What determines the ability of a leader to function? What is the difference
between a Pastor, Song Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Youth Leader,
or a Church Member who is successful and others who are unsuccessful. Is it
their genetics? Is it their family background? What about their birth? What
makes a leader succeed? Is it their giftedness or personality that makes for
    success.

No, none of these. The single most factor that makes a successful leader
from an unsuccessful leader is their persistence. No matter the obstacles,
no matter the differences, it is the ability to pursue their God-given goals
by moving forward. The heart is devoted, the face is set, and to do or die,
    is not to reason why.

  • Your Own Meditation of the Bible

“The Israelite’s did as they were told; some gathered much, some little” (Exodus 16:17).

What would happen if you and I would read more of the Bible on a daily basis? I believe it would change the way we think, talk, and walk. We get into so many ruts in life that sometimes we need to get into the “rut of reading more” and allowing the Spirit of God to shape us into His people.

America needs more Christians who would read, digest, and depend upon the Author to imprint His Word upon the hearts and minds of His people. It would literally change us from the inside out. It would turn our lives upside down and right side up.

The Bible read for significant minutes will become the Essential Everyday Life Commentary upon what we feel, do, and live. Try it and find out how God will speak to each of us on His level. See the wonder of life in His Word and find yourself walking more in His presence. Gather much and you will receive more. Gather little and you will receive more.

  • Let Down. Look Up

    “Let Down. Look Up.”

“Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket” (Acts 9:25).

The greatest day of Paul’s life, beside his salvation, was the day he realized that God’s plan for him was far better than his plan for his own life.

The chance of being let down by someone or something is 1 in 1.

Paul wanted to preach to his own people, the Jews, and went to them but they rejected him because of his new found message of grace in Christ Jesus. He had to be let down in a basket through a window over a wall to escape the bounty which was upon his head.

Paul wanted to go to the Jews but God said, “My plan is for you to go to the Gentiles, Paul.”

    ‘But my heart–‘protested Paul.

‘To the Gentiles, Paul,’ answered the Lord.

    ‘But my background—‘
    ‘To the Gentiles, Paul.’

    ‘But my training–‘
    ‘To the Gentiles, Paul.’

    ‘But, Lord–‘
    ‘To the Gentiles, Paul.’

    ‘But–‘
    ‘To the Gentiles, Paul.’

    ‘OK, Lord.’

Some of you will make this decision today. You’ll finally choose to say, ‘OK, Lord.’ And when you do, you’ll at last will find rest in your soul.

  • Sinners and Their Enticement

“My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother” (Proverbs 1:8).

The culture will try to dictate what you are to believe and how to behave. The culture changes but the culture should not change us. We are to go into the culture and choose to confront the culture with the gospel.

It is the job of the father and mother to teach their children the right way, which is God’s way. The father and mother choose to be the professors in the home, using the Word of God as their main text book, and with total dependence upon the Holy Spirit.

When parents live with an agenda that says, “Me and no other” will rule and reign in my child’s life, they are setting themselves up for a fall, and their children. We are to live in the fear of God and not by our own set of fears. When we live with God’s total control over any thing that takes place in our children’s lives, then we can know God’s power. The culture entices but God’s leadership through the parents can be much stronger when children are taught with truth and love.

  • An Unclouded Day

“And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds, as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain” (2 Samuel 23:4).

The political parties are at extreme odds with one another. One is considered to be dark while the other is considered to be light. One is negative while the other is positive. The Democrats say our country is up. The Republicans say our country is down. We are living in a clouded day, a day of confusion.

The Lord Jesus was neither an optimist nor pessimist but a realist. He saw things as they were and one day we will too. There is coming a day when there will be no more clouded days and heaviness of heart. God will take away away the clouds and the rain and the Light of Day will forever shine without clouds in the sky.

We are going to a land of unclouded day and it is not just a pie in the sky mentality. It is God’s forever provision for His people who may weep through many a dark day but who are bound for the world where not only darkness is not present but even tears are passed away.
